This week, Tyler Talks about interpreting risk and how we should see it.

When you think about risk, how do you interpret it? Do you see it as an opportunity for growth or something that is to be avoided? Maybe it’s scary and something that you actively run from? Today, I’m going to introduce a new way to interpret risk.
Risk can come in all shapes and forms. There’s risk in buying a house, starting a business, investing in the stock market, getting married, or even the type of foods that you consume. The perceived risk of a given situation can depend upon the individual and/or circumstance. Some people embrace risk and others actively run from it. There’s not really a “better or worse” way to perceive risk, but there is a way to view risk as part of a performance mindset.
A performance mindset views risk as an inevitability to reach heightened levels of success and excellence. The safe decision isn’t likely to be the one that takes us there. It’s often the riskier one that will. The reason for this is because risk forces us to grow, adapt, and learn. It puts us outside of our comfort zone. There are obviously degrees of risk and in most cases a risk assessment is required. I’m not suggesting people make the risky decision in every situation they are in. There are of course situations where the risky decision is indeed the wrong one. What I’m proposing is to view risk as an opportunity to expand ourselves and our situations. To not be necessarily afraid of taking risks. Take TCM Performance for example. There’s risk in starting a small business. There are financial risks that come with owning a business that could potentially take away from other parts of my life. There is also reputational risk in putting myself out there for people to judge and criticize. However, I choose not to view my current situation this way. I see risk as inevitable as I try to build my business into something bigger than it is today. I assessed my initial situation as an opportunity to commit to something that I am passionate about. I chose to not view this enterprise as a risk. Of course I was a little bit scared and doubted if it could succeed, but I took the risk anyways. Only time will tell if I made the right decision.
The next time you are faced with a risky situation, view it as an opportunity to learn. See it as a way to step outside your comfort zone. As mentioned in previous weeks, continuously doing things that make you comfortable does not allow you to grow. The same goes for safety and security. View risk through a performance mindset.
