This week, I’m going to be discussing an interesting technique that can be applied in any situation where one does not have control. It’s called The Mentality Shift. What is it?
The mentality shift attempts reframe or change our thoughts and cognitions. More specifically, it allows us to see a different perspective. To change our point of view. All it takes is a little self-awareness and willingness to see things from a different angle.
Before diving deeper, I want you to think about a situation in your life that is outside your control. Perhaps it’s the weather, the mood of your employer, your coaches decision for playing time, or maybe even other drivers on the road. Think about this situation for a moment and think about how you would or have handled it in the past.
This is where the value lies in the mentality shift.
Rather than feeling helpless about this situation, shift your mentality towards one thing about the situation that you can control. There’s power in being able to inflict change over a situation. “Even though I can’t change the outcome of a situation, there are pieces that I can.” If you’re upset about the weather being cold, bundle up and dress warmer. If your employer is in a bad mood, either you can avoid them completely or greet them with a warm smile. You may not have control over your playing time, but you can control the amount of effort you provide each time you step onto the playing surface. If those on the road are driving poorly, perhaps take another route or engage in simple breathing exercises at red lights to reduce stress. There are always pieces of a situation that you can control, even if you think there isn’t. All it takes is a little self-awareness and recognition that your current situation can change. The next time you are faced with an outcome “outside” your control, use the mentality shift to see another perspective or point of view. Take back ownership and control. Consider the difference this could have.
Question: In what way(s) could you use the mentality shift?
