Adversity is something we all face at some point or another. However, we all don’t deal with it the same way. Some people crumble, while others persevere and push through. In my opinion, the ability to face adversity all comes down to mindset. It’s a skill that can be learned. Depending upon how people interpret failure or obstacle will likely determine if they will give up or push forward. Adversity doesn’t have to be a bad thing. In fact, it helps to build character and lets a person know how much they can handle.
Let’s start with an example. Take two people who are faced with the same obstacle. Both are up-and-coming superstars with their company and recently applied for a promotion. Both hadn’t had a lot of experiences being unsuccessful at the company, until they were both not given the promotion. When Person A found out, they were incredibly moody, irritable, and resentful towards their colleagues. This persisted for several weeks. Their quality of work began to suffer. They started to no longer care. In their eyes, they felt they deserved this promotion and it was unfair that they were not given the position. They assumed they didn’t get it because the hiring manager didn’t like them. When Person B found out, they were noticeably disappointed as they felt they would have been a good fit for the position. Unlike Person A though, Person B had conversations with the hiring manager to discuss the reasons behind not being given the promotion. Instead of feeling down, they began to prioritize these areas and work to make them their strengths. They saw this only as a minor setback in the grand scheme of their career. They knew this experience would prepare them for the next time they were given an opportunity. Person A saw this an experience for growth that would ultimately make them better.
After reading this example, it’s pretty obvious who is better able to cope with adversity. This skill isn’t something that always comes naturally. I call it a skill because it is. It is something that is developed over time as challenges or obstacles stand in our way. The mentality of pushing through and persevering through difficult times can only exist if we experience these moments. We begin to learn that we are capable of coming out the other side. Life isn’t over because setbacks happen. This is what adverse moments teach us. It’s all in our mindset.

Love it, great advice which truly is a work in progress, I recognize that there have been times when I haven’t dealt with adversity very well, keep moving forward, thanks for the insites.
Tyler, I loved how you made reference that adversity is a skill that can be learnt. This can happen by being courageous and placing yourself in a position that the outcome for you may not be positive or successful. If we are always place ourselves in situation's that we know only success will be achieved will not allow us to be build the skill of adversity. Being courageous allows us to see how we adapt when placed in a adverse situation and use the adversity to grow for the next time.
