Week 47: Conquer "Blue Monday"
This week, Tyler talks about how to conquer the artificial day known as "Blue Monday."
Hello everyone and Happy Wednesday! Thanks for reading another week of Tyler Talks. If you enjoy the newsletter, consider subscribing for free or sharing with others!
“Blue Monday” — You have likely heard of it. Perhaps on the radio, news, or on your social media feed. “Blue Monday” is the third Monday of January (January 16) and is widely considered the most depressing day of the year. However, there is no real rhyme or reason behind “Blue Monday.” In fact, there is no evidence to suggest that January 16 is in fact the most depressing day of the year. There are, however, several reasons why people may feel low particularly on this day:
December and January are the darkest and coldest months of the year respectively
Christmas and/or year-end credit card bills come due
Most have recently spent time with friends, family, and loved ones during the holiday and Christmas season
Potential weight gain from Christmas and holiday season
No statutory holidays between Christmas to mid-February
These are only some of the reasons why some people feel low on “Blue Monday.”
What I’m proposing for each of you is that on January 16, make it a priority to engage in social connection with others. If you work in an office or around other people, have a conversation with someone you normally wouldn’t connect with. If you work remotely, do the same thing except virtually. Video chat or phone a friend or family member. You don’t know what others may be struggling with and they may need this conversation more than you do. Simply making time for social connection could be all you need to overcome this difficult day. Let’s conquer “Blue Monday” together and make it a thing of the past.
If you would like to have a conversation with me on January 16, you know where to find me!
Until next week,
