Week 26: Embodying an identity
This week, Tyler discusses the need to recognize the identities that we attempt embody.
Happy Wednesday everybody, and welcome to another instalment of “Tyler Talks.”
I want to focus the discussion this week on identities. We all have identities that we strive to embody. “Mother”, “Father”, “Athlete”, “Exerciser”, “Leader”, and “Adventurer.” These are all positive identities. However, not all identities are necessarily positive. For example, “Stubbornness”, “Confrontational”, “Workaholic”, and “Aggressiveness” are some identities that we may not want to show on a routine basis.
Identities are something we all have, but may not recognize in the moment. When I think about myself, I attempt to embody the identity of someone that works hard, is persistent, trusted, physically active, and is willing to learn something new every single day. I try to exemplify behaviours that align with my individual identities. However, sometimes in the moment I forget the identities I strive to embody, and as a result my actions don’t necessarily align with who I want to be. Sometimes our behaviours can stray from what we want to embody, and in these cases it’s important to be mindful and alter our actions accordingly.
I want you to think about your identities and what image you specifically want to represent. What identity (or identities) do you want to be known for? Do the actions you make each day align with your identity? Does your identity assist or limit optimal functioning? If you were to be described to a prospective employer, what would you want this person to say about you? My ask to you this week is to consider the identity you want to embody and to ensure your actions align accordingly. Consider the following quote by James Clear, "Your habits are how you embody a particular identity. When you make your bed, you embody the identity of someone who is clean and organized. When you study, you embody the identity of someone who is studious. What identity are you embodying today? Who are your habits helping you become?"
Reflection: What identity (or identities) do you want to embody?
Thank you for reading.
Until next week,
